Jonathan Spencei like chinese Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? Jonathan Spence is an historian of China. His book The Search for Modern China is one of the standard texts on the last several hundred years of Chinese history, and is rather heavy going if the reader hasn't a basic grounding in the subject. Some of his other books are more accessible. The Question of Hu relates the story of a Chinese Christian brought to France by a Jesuit priest during the reign of Louis XV. The Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci tells the story of Matteo Ricci, a Jesuit priest and one of the first Christian missionaries to visit China. God's Chinese Son is a history of China's Tai-Ping rebellion in the mid-nineteenth century. Reviews
