John Steinbeckmac and the boys Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? Two words: Cannery Row. Heaven knows, Steinbeck needs no help from me; his place in literature is secured by such books as The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men. But for my part, give me Cannery Row. And don't let anybody tell you it's a hard-hitting expose of the gritty realities of life on Monterey's Cannery Row once upon a time; in fact, it's a warm, hugely funny, deeply insightful romance of a particular place and time. Plus, it features one of the single funniest passages I know: the story of the Great Frog Hunt. If you've been avoiding Steinbeck because you had to read The Grapes of Wrath or Of Mice and Men in high school and found him boring and or depressing, have no fear. Get a copy of Cannery Row and enjoy. But remember--it's funny!
